Welcome to 2008!
If the start to our year is anything to go by, I propose the theme for 2008 be “the only thing we can be sure of is change.”
If you can make it through the power cuts long enough to download your email you have hopefully received Telkom Media’s 1st set of briefs with encouraging terms of trade that we hope ring the bells of change with other broadcasters. (If not please go to their website www.telkommedia.co.za and download)
No doubt the new SABC board will filter their ideas through for change within the public broadcaster and we hold our breath for the announcement from DTI on the new rebate and hope that the much anticipated CSP will be signed off and implemented.
Personally I find change invigorating, it keeps one innovative. So as I write this from my ‘sunlit’ office hoping my battery will last through yet another of our many power cuts, I am thinking about the changes and challenges that face our industry this year.
Certainly the power shortage will have a great impact on our industry - not only in the production of our work (and cost thereof) but also on our audiences who will no doubt miss many episodes of their favourite shows. As we go about finding solutions to our power supply needs, may I urge that we keep our planet in mind and not simply rush out and strike up generators, but rather give serious consideration to alternative energy sources to run our offices where possible – energy that is clean, does not further pollute our air or push up demand for fuel.

The date for the AGM will be set shortly and we urge you to please attend as this organisation is your voice and needs you to guide it.
Finally on the subject of change – Melody will be sending out invoices for the 2008 IPO fees with this message – the rates which have NOT changed this year. Please, rattle up that small change in your production coffers and keep the IPO alive.
